New Zealand as our home
There is no doubt that everyone in our community thinks of New Zealand as their home, a place of refuge, a place of rest, a place to build anew. Our community has as its goal to extend the same arms that received it. Our community is made up of a lot of individuals with different skill sets helping within the community as well as beyond it. You’ll meet us as nurses, doctors, students, artists, sport players, drivers, teachers or lawyers and in all those areas, we extend a friendly hand. Building a stronger future for our children requires all hands on deck and we call all those who would join us on this journey of making the world a better place for our tomorrow.
A reach history
Many of remembers those nights of having our elders telling the stories of the old, those that would start with “Once Upon A Time,..”. Still some of us remember our parents pushing us to learn of the world we live in so that our future can be brighter. And some of us remember our times in the hills and valleys farming for the future. And still some of us remember that feeling of laying a brick one by one until a whole house finally stands strong. Then there are those conversations among men, women, and children, the giving of oral knowledge between fathers and sons, between mothers and daughters. In all those instances there is an inherent feeling of moving forward, building together, keeping families strong, and keeping communities strong.
Let’s share our culture
The Burundian drummers are well known around the world with their ability to move people’s spirits. Theirs is the sound and rhythm that has traveled from the past, that remote past when Kings and Queens ruled. The same sound and rhythm continues to carry the young and old of today, looking ahead, calling every tired soul to lift his head high.
Burundian women will do their work while singing their songs or sometimes humming those songs. But it is in their dancing that something special then reveals itself. After that, life is once again brought down to its simplicity and there it makes sense.
There is also that magical energy of children when they are together. There you will witness all kinds of creativity in one place. They are experts in coming up with all sorts of activities whether it’s dancing competition, racing one another, sharing news, laughing together and playing football. And witnessing all that parents are filled with so much joy and strength for the future.
Every Burundian kid believes their mother creates magic in the kitchen with food ingredients. They will take a look around the kitchen and see lots of opportunities where you only see one. And Burundian dishes are too good. It’s no exaggeration to say that you are left licking your fingers after every meal.
